Long-living Lilies

At the Souq-as-sabt, the Saturday farmer's market at Al Mouj, we hesitated to buy flowers since we already had a bouquet of fresh white chrysanthemums at home.

Priya held two bunches of calla lilies under my nose.
"Choose one" she said.
I chose the one which had a few yellow and mustard flowers.
"Those are for your wedding anniversary from us" smiled Priya.
They were very welcome because I had never received calla lilies before.

I tried to put them into contemporary arrangements later that day...

 A week after...
Another week after...
 Almost 3 weeks ...

Their stalks were trimmed and the water was changed once every week. The slightly wilted ones had to go but I didn't have the heart to throw them away. I put them out in the garden. Seeing them there, Dr Nevin, who had come to visit our neighbour, exclaimed,
"What lovely lilies! What are they called? And where did you find them?"
