Our Grandma,
Anna D’Cruz, whom we call Mothi Aai, turned hundred today.
“What do you
want for your birthday, Mothi Aai?” we ask.
“I just want
a roomful of people” she says with a toothy grin.
She has
lived through many events in history although she has been completely oblivious
of them all. Mothi Aai cannot read and has rarely ever been away from our small
town of Vasai.
Still, she
has her own brand of wisdom – all home-grown, homespun, simple, domestic.
Having seen
more than three generations blossom and fade, Mothi Aai has gained an insight
into human psychology that can come only through experience. Her reward for
having lived this long is her tremendous patience and tranquillity.
As a
centurion, she is a rare one. She can bite into an apple with teeth which are
all her own! She relishes spicy fish curries while ignoring the warnings of her
'adult' supervisors.
Today, as a
family, we feel blessed to have her angelic presence among us.
Alleluia!
